Give Me Liberty...

Jon Stram's picture

Once again, we’ve been brought face to face with the specter of an evil man taking the lives of a large number, 49 at present count, of our fellow human beings and fellow United States citizens.

Once again, we’re faced with the harsh reality of evil or misguided politicians or fellow citizens using a horrible event in the attempt to further their agenda.

What is that agenda? At its core, it is the attempt to control, through the taking away of liberties, from those with whom they disagree or fear.

Camo, Concealment, and Hiding in Plain Sight

It’s another rainy morning here at my cabin in Southeast Alaska. The boat motors are still in the shop; the salmon aren’t yet in the rivers; deer season is still two months away, so I’m sitting upstairs at my computer, looking out over my small acreage of young forest. Logged in 1994, the trees are now growing back so thick, and so fast, and so tall, you can barely see the ground!

Starting Over – Again

Thorne Bay, Alaska.  Home, finally, once more.  Or as much as that is possible, in this world.  In the words of that favorite old gospel song of mine, this world is not my home, I’m just a passing through. My treasures are laid up, somewhere beyond the blue. The angels beckon me, from Heaven’s open door, And I can’t, feel at home, in this world, anymore.

This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through. My treasures are laid up, somewhere beyond the blue. The angels beckon me, from Heaven’s open door, And I can’t, feel at home, in this world, anymore.

A Hunter's Life

As I sit here this morning, I think about hunting; and life. My life. As far back as I can remember, I’ve either been, or wanted to be, a hunter.

A lot of people don’t think of themselves as hunters, and by the very nature of their actions and their expressed beliefs, it's hard for those of us who openly identify ourselves as hunters to think of those ‘others’ as hunters. But they are. Humans, by their very nature, are all hunters. Here's how:

Strategic Partnering

As I sit here this early September morning, I find myself doing something that I don't do too often: pondering. As I am now in my 6th decade of existence, life seems to be going by faster and faster. At the same time, I feel as if I’m getting slower and slower. Something is wrong with that equation, but I doubt if Einstein even had that figured out.

Weight Training for the Fall Hunting Season

It’s that time of year to get SERIOUS about getting in shape for the fall hunting seasons! Lose that off season padding around the middle, and start getting those old meat-packing muscles back into hiking trim.
